4s.5 "Liberté, egalité, Beyoncé"

After discussing different art forms and even holding our own art gallery in class, we're coming to the conclusion some of the most amazing works of art are all about breaking the mould and causing a great impression on the audience. Don't you think this sounds like a great idea for our 2014 Portfolio project? Get ready for...

1. What is the project about?
"Liberté, egalité, Beyoncé" is an English project consisting of revisiting classic works of art that are connected with freedom and equal rights. It will also be our contribution to the 2014 Portfolio school exhibition.

2. Why "Liberté, egalité, Beyoncé"?
Because it can help you discover classic works of art from a new perspective while having fun working in English.

3. What do I have to do?
You must find a classic work of art that has been reinterpreted by a contemporary famous or unknown artist. Take a look at some examples:

DELACROIX, Eugène. Liberty guiding the people (1830)

KIKIRIKILLER (blogger). Liberté, egalité, Beyoncé (2013)

BARTHOLDI, Frédéric A. Liberty enlightening the world (1886).
FELIX, E. Liberty in crisis (2014).

4. How can I find my work of art?
Contemporary artists, including bloggers, are constantly revisiting art. Classic works of art, such as the ones presented above, are often used as the basis for reinterpretations. A classic work of art may be intepreted from different perspectives:

- As new historical events occur (e.g. popular revolutions, wars, etc.)
- As new social groups are fighting for their rights (e.g. women, LGTB, African-Americans, etc.)
- As new cultural trends or fashions are set (e.g. pop culture, fast food culture, etc.)

A good starting point for your work can be Google. Your objective: find an artist who has reinterpreted classic art from a new, grounbreaking perspective. Remember your work of art must be connected with freedom or equal rights!

5. What art forms can I choose from?
You can choose from any form of visual art. The original work of art and its reinterpretation may include paintings, sculpture, graffiti, installations, fashion design, craft, etc.

6. Need help?
Your English, Art or History teachers can give you a hand!

    Indian Giocconda
    by Eleonora Dimitrova

The amazing work of art Indian Giocconda, which was posted on a blog in 2014, was created by an unknown artist. This piece is based on the famous painting Giocconda by the famous classic Italian painter Leonado Da Vinci, which was created in the 16th century.

In the reinterpreted version, the personification of a beautiful classic woman is replaced by an Indian woman, who is wearing a typical Indian dress, typical hair and beautiful complements. By substituting the beautiful classic woman with an Indian woman, the artist is reflecting that any person can be the same or more beautiful than the original Giocconda. Now the world is changing and we have more equality.

I love the way the artist uses an Indian character to make a beautiful woman. Classic art isn't my cup of tea but the reinterpretation is very good. I think that anyone can be beautiful and this reinterpretation will be recognized in the future.

, Girl With a Pearl Earring
    By: Nur Hadj-Sahraoui

The impressive work of art Painting with a Pearl Earring was created in 2012 by the young contemporary Spanish artist Cesar Santos. This piece is based on the well-known painting Girl With a Pearl Earring by the famous artist Tracy Chevalier.

The reinterpreted version shows a girl just with underwear on, painting herself with a lot of clothes. She is holding a palette and paintbrushes. She is wearing a white bra. She has got a natural red lipstick on. Her hair is down. She also has an earring. By substituing a girl with a lot of clothes and the same girl painting herself only wearing a bra, the artist is reflecting that women's are free and that they can have men's jobs, and it represent women's rights too.

I love the way he shows women's rights. What I like the most is everything, to be honest; the colours, the way he shows the girl, the background, the painting... I think Cesar Santos is a very original artist and he will have his prize in the future because of the beautiful work of arts he paints.

    The Transformation of Lady Liberty
    by Rubén Mariscal

“The Transformation of Lady Liberty” is a bronze sculpture. The sculpture was made by Peter Alton R. Williams in september 2006. This reinterpreted work of art is based on the Statue of Liberty.

The picture shows the Statue of Liberty holding a wooden cross on the right hand and a goldon crown on the head.
It represents that the church is free and everybody can go to church.

In my opinion it just isn't my thing, because I haven't been a big fan of religion, but what I like the most is the originality of this work of art.

    Lady Liberty is Crying
    by Ana García

The impressive work of art Lady Liberty is Crying, was posted on the blog palominoroad.com in July 31st of 2013 and it was created by Rabble Rouser. This drawing based on the awesome Statue of Liberty in New York, which commemorates Liberty in United States.

In the reinterpreted version the Statue of Liberty is crying and she has her hand on her face like if she had been dissapointed. In the original the meaning changed because the statue represents Liberty but the reinterpretation represents the destruction of Liberty, like if it were a false Liberty, for example in a lot of countries like Venezuela where there are revolutions, or wars and injustice in countries of Africa.

I' ve always been a big fan of the Statue of Liberty and the reinterpretations. I like this because is a real situation on the world. There is false Liberty in a lot of places. What I like the most is how the author preservated the structure of the original statue.

    By: Iván Garzón.

The name of the picture is Liberté, Egalité , Beyonce was created by Kikirikiller in 2013, is a blogger. It's made of acrylic paint. The original painting was created by Eugine Delacroix in 1830, and the name is Egalité, Liberté, Fraternité.

In the picture you can see the fans following Beyonce, and Beyonce wearing a long yellow shirt and a black bikini top. Beyonce is raising a flag of France. In the original was a woman with a flag of France, it represented the france revolution, “The liberté leading the people”. In the other you can see the people following Beyonce because we like the music and do anything to go a one concept of Beyonce.

I like it because i think Beyonce is a good artist and a big singer. The expression of Beyonce is the most what I liked it.

    Statue on Fire
    María Cardell

This work of art was painted on a wall in 2008, it was created by Streetdog. It's a graffiti painted with spray, what I like the most is the colours which were used by the author. Apparently, this work of art is based on the Statue of Liberty.

In my opion the reinterpreted version shows that people's liberty is desappearing. Just like in the original, the composition and colours don't change, but in the reinterpred version the Statue of Liberty is on fire.

What I like the most is the message and the colours. The fire looks real! And I like his imagination.

    LIBERTÉ, ÉGALITÉ, BEYONCÉ
    by Carmen Hernández

The tittle of imprissive work is Liberté, égalité, Beyoncé. Kikireikiller is created this reinterpretation. He was based in Liberty Leading the People by Eugene Delacroix 1830. The reinterpretation was posted in 2013 on a blog, it is a acrylic painting.

In the reinterpretation version we can see famous singer Beyoncé, who is wearing a long yellow skirt and a black bikini top. She is holding the French flag. Just like in the original painting, the woman is changed, but the people are following no. The reinterpretation represents the fight of liberty expression, because with music you can express you ideas and in the original are fighting for democracy.

I love the way he uses a famous artist with followers. I've always been a big fan of Beyoncé. It is express liberty of everybody and I think Kikirikiller has a good idea.

    Barbie Liberty by Angela Fernandez
This work of art is called Barbie Liberty, it was posted on the internet in 2011. The author is unknown. It is a sculpture and it is based on the Liberty’s statue by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi in 1886 made in 1886.
In the reinterpreted version, the statue is a Barbie. The sculpture is smaller than the original but it’s very similar. It is holding the torch in his hand. In the new version the background is change. By substituting the statue with Barbie, the sculpture is reflecting the women’s liberty.
I like the reinterpretation and the original because the meaning is liberty and I’ve always been a big fan of Barbie. I think the author is a very original artist but I don’t know if it’s a real sculpture or made with a computer.
