2x.2 Portfolio project 2010-11: "Green earth"

"Green earth" is the topic for the Portfolio project our school is carrying out this year. Some of your other teachers may be dealing with this topic also in their classes. In English, we are going to learn more about a very interesting problem of far-reaching consequences which global warming has brought about: the relocation of precipitation. With this project I aim to help you improve your scientific literacy (i.e. the knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and processes), which is a competence you are also developing in other subjects. You will:

1. Practise selecting and assessing different sources of information.
2. Speculate on the available data if they are not informative enough to draw conclusions.
3. Explain facts that affect the natural world and predict their potential future development.
4. Analyse existing scientific evidence to evaluate alternative perspectives and their implications.
5. Communicate coherent and reasoned conclusions.

Hopefully, this project will also represent a sensitisation campaign for you and lay the foundations for a more responsible attitude towards climate change.

Before we get into the topic in greater depth, I would like you to answer questions 1 and 2 on the blog:

1. Have you ever heard about the relocation of precipitation before? What do you think this problem is about?
2. Have a look at the map below.

The red area shows the village where I come from, Beniarbeig (Alacant). It's a very small village of barely 2.000 inhabitants very near the coast of Dénia. In October 2007, something very shocking happened that made my village hit the headlines. All of a sudden, my village was on the front page of the most important Spanish newspapers! The set of three photographs below shows snaps of the events. Can you guess what happened? Imagine you are a journalist. Write a short news story of about 80 words for your newspaper.

3. Try to guess the meaning of the underlined words on this post from their context. Then use them in a sentence which is different from the one in this text and translate them into Catalan or Spanish. Use a dictionary only if necessary. We'll correct this exercise in class, so don't post this on the blog.

  1. 1- No, I've never heard about it before, but I think it's a problem that affects areas that have not much rain normally, and that suddenly suffer a lot of precipitacion.
2- The little and peaceful village of Alacant, Beniarbeig, of 2.000 habitants, this morning is not like we usually see it. It seems imposible, but the river has increased the level of the water exaggeratedly! The water overflows the shore, and his power it's unstoppable. It has destroyed the traditional bridge and threat with continue growing up.
Experts are investigating the causes of this phenomenon, and they think that this is probably a consecuence of global warming. A phenomenon called “The relocation of precipitacion”. A event that has leave us impressed, and that makes the people of this village be scared.

  2. -I don't know a lot of this, but with global warming the clime changes and with it the precipitations change too.
-In October 2007, a very little village of Alancant, Beniarbeig, near the coast of Dénia, of approximately 2.000 habitants suffered an incredible phenomenon as a consequence of golbal warming. It is called "The relocation of precipitation". People from Beniarbeig were afraid because the level of the water was increased by precipitations and the river Girona goes up. This river crossed the village and destroyed the Beniarbeig's bridge. This bridge will be reconstructed because it connects the sud of village with Ondara.

  3. 1.Relocation of precipitation is a water problem. When it has rained a lot, the places where the water has stayed ever, return to have water, and that water drags all with is in its course, houses, trees, cars, lights, etc.

If people build her houses in a water course, they will run the risk of losing it.

The water ever return to its her place.
2- Something very shocking happend in Octover 2007 in the peaceful village of Alacant, Beniarbeig, near Denia. Later a hard raing, the village was flooded because bridges couldn't carry more water. One of that bridges, where after the rain was dry, that moment was empty of water, and broke. Consequently the government of the village had to build a new bridge, stronger than the older bridge.

  5. 1. No, I don't have heard about it before, the problem is about water, relocation of precipitation means that the water return to the place where it was before.

    2. Beniarbeig, October 2007. The river of Beniarbeig was completly dry, but in a few time the river increased in water. The water came with a strong force and it took everything with it that were in front of it. Now they will build a new bridge, stronger than the last one , because the bridge connect Beniarbeig with Ondara.

  6. 1. I had never heard about it, but I think that it' s a problem with the level of precipitacions as a consequence of global warming.

    2. In Beniarbeig (Alacant), a village which has 2.000 habitants, has happened a very unusual phenomenon. Suddenly, it started to rain strongly and the water level of the Girona river has increased.
Scientists are investigating about that and at the moment they have a possible answer. What happen was a consequence of "the relocation of precipitacion", an effect of the global warming.
The people of the village are working harder to build a new bridge and to make it more sure than the old.

  7. 1- Well, I don't know about the "relocation of precipitation" term, but I think I can guess the meaning. Relocation of precipitation is the action, that happens because of Global Warming, which changes the places where it usually rained or not.
2- The 12th of October 2007 in Beniarbeig a small town of Alacant, with has 2.000 inhabitants, was damaged because of a non-stopping rain. That caused a stream in the river Girona, which destroyed the bridge that connected the south and north of the town. This calamity probably has been a result of climate change. The villagers are worried and scared about what the future will bring them. At the moment they are working to reconstract the damages.

  9. 1-I think that the relacation of precipitaction is a phenomenon which is caused by the climate change. It makes that the precipitation move to other places that it never use to be.
2- In Beniarbeig, which is a very small village of Alacant, happened a very shocking incident. One day, the 2.000 inhabitants realized that their bridge had collapsed. The most striking is that the river that crosses it didn’t use to be full.
Nowadays the little village has an other bridge, which is safer and has a very nice appearance.
