3s.2 Final frontiers: about metorites and asteroids

Watch this video. This happened in Russia last Friday. What can you see?

Read this piece of news and answer the questions below on the blog: Asteroid zooms safely past Earth (CBBC Newsround)
  1. Is this news story about the same event you saw in the video? Why (not)?
  2. How fast did the asteroid fly?
  3. Who discovered it? When was it observed for the first time?
  4. Will this asteroid crash against the Earth soon? Why (not)?
  5. Find out about the difference between an asteroid and a meteorite on the internet.

  1. 1- Yes, is more or less the same event.Because this event appears in the news.
2-The asteriod flew at 7.8 kilometres a second.
    3-By astronomers.Spotted in February 2012.
4-No, bacause rotation around the sun 368 days.
5-The asteroid is more small than the meteorite and if you see it from the earth resembles a star.

  2. 1-No, because the meteorite that fell in Russia was not the same as Spain had discovered.
2-The asteroid was to 7.8 kilometers for second.
3-He descovered La Sagra Sky Survey, in Spain. He was observed for the first time in February 2012.
4-No, because taxes in effect at the Sun.
5-The difference is that the meteorite is a portion of the asteroid.

    1. No, becose in the video we can see a meteorite and in the news speak about an asteroid.
    2. The asteroid flyed 7.8 Kilometres a second.
    3. The astronomers at the La Saga Sky Survey. The first time was in February 2012.
    4. No, becose is very far away.
    5. An asteroid is sometimes called a minor planet or planetoid. A meteorite is any object that has entered the atmosphere of another object and survived to impact the surface. They are small Solar System bodies in orbit around the Sun.

  4. 1. No, because in this news explain an Asteroid zooms safely past Earth.

    2. 7.8 kilometres a second.

    3. at the La Sagra Sky Survey in Spain. In February 2012.

    4. No, because it doesn't orbit in the same path as the Earth.

    5. Asteroid is a rest to a attempt of a planet and is bigger than the Meteorite. And the Meteorite is an bright rock and it was made in the Earth atmosphere and is smaller than the Asteroid.

1-Yes, because they are talking about the same.
2-The meteorite wasn't travelling slowly. It traveling to 7.8 kilometres a second.
3-The asteroid was first spotted in February 2012 by astronomers at the La Sagra Sky Survey in Spain.
    4-No.
5-The difference is that asteroids are remnants failed to form a rocky planet and can't have a atmosphere because they are very small instead meteorites are streaks of light produced in the upper atmosphere of the Earth by the asteroid impact.

  6. 1.No because the video we saw in class was about a meteorite that exploded in Russia and destroyed a lot of glasses and buildings.

    2.At 7.8 kilometres a second.

3.The first time they saw it was in February of 2012, by Spanish astronomers.

4.No, because this meteorite will orbit the Sun again in 368 days, but not in the same way as the earth.

5.A meteorite is a rock that burns up when enters the atmosphere and can crash on the Earth's surface.
And a asteroid is a metallic body smaller than a planet and bigger than a meteorite that orbits around the Sun in an inner orbit to Neptune.

    1. Yes, because in the event see the asteroid and the story tell what happen.

    2. The asteroid fly 7,8 km a second.

    3. Astronomers at the La Sagra Sky Survey in Fubruary 2012.

    4. No, because the asteroid doesn't orbit in the same path as the Earth.

    5. The meteorite pass the atmosphere and the asteroid is in space.

    1. No, because the asteroid passes Earth's 28.000 km.

    2. A 7.8 km per second.

    3. The astronomers at the La Sagra Sky Survey in Spain . In February 2012.

    4. No, because this asteroid doesn't orbit in the same path as the Earth.

    5. ASTEROID: Are resots failed to form a rocky planet would have had 4 times the mass of Earth. Dry, dusty objects are too small to have an atmosphere.
METEORITES: Known as shooting stars, meteors are trails of luminous material produced in the upper atmosphere of the Earth by the impact of small fragments of comets or asteroids powder called meteoroids.

  9. 1. No, because in the video we can see a meteorite that fall in Russia last Friday, and the news story speak about an asteroid that past the Earth this same day.
    2. The asteroid fly 7.8 km/s.
    3. It was discovered by astronomers at the La Sagra Sky Survey in Spain. It was observed in February 2012.
    4. No, because it is pretty far of here now.
    5. The difference is where they are when they are being observed. An asteroid is always going to be in space. If it enters an atmosphere it becomes a meteor, and if it hits the ground, is a meteorite.

  10. 1- No, because the news story talks about an asteroid, not about a meteorite.
    2- 7.8 kilometres a second.
3- La Sagra Sky Survey in Spain. In February 2012.
4- No, because the "2012 DA 14" past at a distance of just 28,000 kilometres, but they said that he wouldn't orbit in the same path as the Earth.
5- ·Asteroid = A relatively small, inactive body, composed of rock, carbon or metal, which is orbiting the Sun.
·Meteorite = A meteoroid that survives its passage through the Earth's atmosphere and impacts the Earth's surface.

  11. 1-No it isn´t. Because in the video the meteor crash with the Earth in Russia and in the news the asteroid doesn´t crash.

2-The asteroid fly at 7.8 kilometres a second.

3-The asteroid was discover by astronomers in Spain. The asteroid was first spotted in February 2012 by astronomers at the La Sagra Sky Survey in Spain.

4-No, because its orbits the Sun in 368 days but doesn't orbit in the same path as the Earth.

5-Asteroids are large, are big collections of rock, metal, and dust. Meteorites are parts of larger meteors that survived entering the atmosphere to land on the surface of the Earth.

    3. It was discovered by astronomers at the La Sagra Sky Survey in Spain.
4.The meteor will return because it orbits the Sun in 368 days, but doesn't orbit in the same path as the Earth, for that i can say, the meteor will not crash on the ear again.
